vmfiles on 1&1 server

hello my site is on 1&1 server and i can't create the vmfiles directory out of the site content so virtuemart told me an error message :
"Attention, le Chemin vers les médias de produits à vendre n'est pas correct. Pour des raisons de sécurité, il est très important de créer un dossier dans un chemin n'est pas accessible par une URL, créer également un dossier dans les factures de stocker vos données sensibles en sécurité. Notre chemin est suggéré pour votre système d'/homepages/42/d393980550/vmfiles"
Ok this directory is accesiible by url but i have no other choice ...
do you know a way to do it working ?
maybe by restricting the access to this directory by a .htaccess file?

This can be a problem with some shared servers such as 1&1 or Godaddy, so just create a directory off the site root, but give it a name which is not likely to be guessed, eg errsarrsdcf - make sure you enter this for the safe path in VM template configuration. 

.htaccess is tricky, as you needcustomers to be able to download files from the "safe" path.
