HELP! No shipping fees if 1st item emptied from cart

so in testing my usps...if i add item or multiple to cart, it works fine. if i clear those items and add new items to cart, there is no shipping added?? discount and tax work fine, but there are no shipping costs added for new items in cart.

and if you click on add shipping, it gives this message...but you can check out without selecting shipping...

Would my life be easier if i use a plug-in? if so, which one??

Hello
If no shipment is displayed, you can turn on the virtuemart debug on.
Some information will be displayed and will help you to find out why no quotes are returned.
The usual errors are:
1. The vendor information is not correct (often it is the ZIP code)
2. The products have no weight
3. The services configurated in the USPS configuration are different from the ones returned by USPS
