unpublished product cat still works

On our VM2 site when you unpublished a product cat you can still go to the link.

What has happened is that google has picked up the link a customer has found something on google and ordered it but we unpublished the category from the site.

Is there a way to make it so the link can not be used anymore once unpublished??

Or make it so that when a Category is unpublished all the items are unpublished within it
