Child products not adopting tax rules or categories

I've just noticed that when I view any product on my site that has a child product, the price is set at 0.   Looking into the issue, it seems that this occurs when child products are created and they do NOT inherit the tax settings from the parent.  This causes all products (parent or child) to appear as if "price not set".

Do I really have to manually click into each child product and set the tax settings?  Surely this should be inherited?

(Category is also not being inherited, which is causing a different set of problems in viewing and searching on the site.)
