FTP Errors While Installing

I keep trying to install the latest version of VM on the latest version of Joomla and keep getting this error. Yes, I extracted the files first. I checked file permissions and they were all set to 755. FTP is working properly with Joomla because I used the installation manager to install a template.

Here is the error:
        JFTP::login: Unable to login
        JFTP: :store: Unable to use passive mode
        Warning: Failed to move file!
        JFTP: :mkdir: Bad response
        JFTP: :chmod: Bad response
        Unable to create destination

Any suggestions?

why do you need FTP to install vmart?

its installable via the extension manager
