Hello everybody,

there is a little problem that I would like to check with you. As I always do I put the domain of the website in eMail I registered here. In your case it is:

xxxxx

This is a good way to check where somebody gives my eMail away, ´cause the eMail is unique and your place is the onlinest place I use this email.

However, today I got a SPAM-Mail to exactly this account. The mail is the following:

QuoteCurrently Practicing MDs in America

788,300 in total <> 17,624 emails

Lots of MDs in specialties like Orthopedics, Surgery, Radiology, Dermatology, Neurology, General Practice etc..

16 different sortable fields

Cost just slashed -  $399

{}{}{} If you order by the end of the week you can take all the items below for fr ee {}{}{}

American Pharmaceutical Company List
Names and email addresses of 47,000 employees in high-ranking positions

Complete Contact List of Hospitals in the US Complete contact information for the important jobs held at the hospitals

Complete and Accurate Contact List for Dental Service Providers 597,000 dentists and dental services ( a $350 value!)

Listing of US Chiropractors

I wonder what happened. I see three possibilities:

-> This eMail is sent out by you, but I doubt that
-> You gave my eMail to a SPAMMER, but I wonder about that
-> You had a hacker, who stole the eMail. In this case you should Act!

It would be nice if you could asnwer me that question.

Please take care, when you don´t answer or delete this post, then it seems to me like you just sell eMail-Adresses and don´t want to comment that. I really want to know what happened there!

Best wishes, Julain!

Hello again,

no answer?

Well, to keep it short: I gave you my eMail and a few weeks later I get a SPAM-Mail to exactly that eMail. I wrote something here because I wanted to know the reason for that.

If you prefear not to answer I will put a little warning on joomla.org, that eMails here are not save.

I am totally okay when you say that this was an error, that somebody hacked your site or whatever. But ... I WANT TO KNOW IT!

Best wishes, Julian!

Oh man, welcome in today's world!
This forum allows to hide your email address from public. "Public" means unregistered users. Log out here and check your account, your email address won't be visible. Search Google for it, it won't find it. Log back in and you'll see it again, like I can (as a normal registered user, not just as administrator).
If you've received just 1 SPAM email, I think this is not quite much!

Hi Sören,

well, I recieve masses of SPAM and I take care a lot about my eMail-Domains and where I publish something.

Your reply means, that you are publishing the eMails of your users to everybody who signed in here, is that right? I would strongly (!) recommend to change that and to hide eMail-adresses by default.

Spammers love to use bots to search out every eMail. So it is very simple: A spammer registeres here, trains a bot and half a day later he has a complete dump of your user-database.

Nice to know that you don´t "sell" the eMails and that it is a simple setting-thing. But really, I think that most of the Users in a forum expect eMails to not being published. Also not to other users. For sending messages there are PNs, there is no need to publish an eMails.

Best wishes, Ju lian!

I am new here. I hope the 2nd and 3rd possibilities does not exist here. I am new here and I want my details to be kept by virtuemart only and not sold to others.

Why would anyone want to sell your address? There is not be much value in mail addresses these days as they are so easy to harvest.

If you don't want anyone registered in this forum to see your email address in your profile then just select Hide email address from public?  in the options available under Profiles/Account Related Settings
