Paypal integration

I am running a current version of both Joomla and Virtuemart. Everyhting seems to be fine but when someone goes through the check out process and chooses paypal, the final page displays a confirmation of the order. Is there some way for it to forward to paypal to make the payment? I have entered my paypal email as requested in the config form but nothing seem to happen in contacting paypal in way. I am new to virtuemart so I don;t know if that's normal. I assumed when checking out it should direct you to paypal if selected. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
