Joomla 1.5 and VM beta3 1.1: Problem with setting catagories per row

We want 3 categories per row and cannot get it to work.  We have tried modifying it in the category sections, but it stays 4 wide no matter what.

Also, is there a way to remove the product line (Name, SKU, price, etc) from my subcategory pages?

If you change $categories_per_row in components\com_virtuemart\themes\default\templates\common\categoryChildlist.tpl.php it will work.  There is a check for a value in $categories_per_row but I have not found out where it is set yet.
