[4.0.4/6] Top Level Category displays child products on Category page

Hey,

I have a page (type: Category Layout) where I display the latest products.

In VM3 only the latest parent products were displayed.
In VM4(0.4/6) the child products are displayed also.

It happens when Select a category is set to Top Level Category in the menu item.

Was it a mistake in VM3?
Is it a bug in VM4?

I understand that technically Top Level Category includes uncateigorised/child products as well.
But it would be nice to only display the latest parents again.
