Only show mother products on mainpage not the child

I have search this forum, but can't really find the answer I need. In my shop steenwereld.nl I have mother products and the most of them have one or more child products connected. Because of the filter I use I need to connect to every child the category and manufacturer.
The filter is working correct. But on the mainpage I only want to show the mother products and not the childs.
Is there a configuration switch or must I make changes to php files?

I think you have not assigned any category in your child products. Open each of your child products and assign a category.

Connecting a category makes the Child visible. There is a switch in configuration to include search for uncategorized Children. The other way around, no clue.
Uncategorize your Children and test the switch under configuration.

Unfortunately the display or not of the child products is connected with the category assignment.

I think it would be much better to have a setting for displaying or not child products.
Messing up the data structure with the display is a big drawback, especially for shop's that import/export data to/from other systems
