I think I am going to do a fresh install with Version: 2.0.26a

What I did:
Tried installing the newest version of Joomla and Virtuemart on numerous servers with various operating systems various versions of PHP and none will send email from the new 2.6.6 VM!

I downloaded 2.0.26a and the emails send out just fine from my servers now. I think there may be a bug in the newest version...

So, unless someone can save me from a week of transferring my entire store (very large store hundreds of users). I guess I know what I will be doing this weekend :(

interesting - but one has to assume if this was a "normal" bug (as in happens to everyone on a "normal" setup the forum would be full of complaints

But if works for you.. why not 2.0.26d? 'a' had a memory leak from memory

use 2.6.27

The step from 2.0.24 to 2.0.26D is bigger than from 2.0.26 to 2.6!

I am having this same problem. Running Joomla! 2.5.28 and VirtueMart 2.6.17. I can't update to Joomla 3 at this time until I can get the template files for 3 from the developer. The order emails do send with an off server email address. Any on server email addresses will throw the "Could not instantiate mail function" error. Anybody have any ideas why this is happening?

Sounds like some sort of anti-spam measure on the host server - you could try changing the setting for "Use the vendor email address" in configuration/shop in case that helps.  Changing to SMTP for mail may possibly work for you.  Or find a new host......
