Quantity Pricing + Free Shipping at 'x' level?

I found this post on how to configure for quantity based pricing:
http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=126722.0

However, our schema looks like this because we're modifying on both item and shipping:
1@ $14.95 + S&H $2.95 (ground) or $8.95 2ndDay
2@ $27.95 + S&H $4.95 (ground) or $8.95 2ndDay
3@ $39.95 + FREE ground or +$3.95 for 2ndDay
4@ $49.95 + 1 free (total 5) + Free ground or +$5.95 2ndDay

Another issue is that this is only one SKU out of five total that we plan to have in the short term, possibly more in the future.  All will ship via USPS, so at least that narrows things down a bit.

It's possible we're overcomplicating this in terms of the quantity based shipping modifications.  Your input would be appreciated.  Thanks!

There's some crazy stuff going on here.

I haven't even gotten to the shipping piece of it because I'm stuck on quantity pricing.  I tried to use jenkinhill's method by adding another price, but it's just not working.

What I want:
1@ $14.95
2@ $27.95
3@ $39.95
4@ $49.95 (get one free at this level)
6-9@ $12.00
10-2-@ $9.75

When I add (for example) three to the cart, the unit (base price, I guess) is shown as $14.95 $39.95, but there's a DISCOUNT column of $72.31 for a total price of $119.85 which confuses the crap out of me and doesn't make sense on any planet I can think of.

Can someone help?

Sounds like you are not using price per usit. The price for 3 would be set to 39.95/3, ie $13.32 per unit compared to the single price of $14.95.

Maybe you should be using the quantity plugin:  http://extensions.virtuemart.net/products/quantity-related-price-calculation-detail

Yep, that's what it was.  Adjusted the unit pricing and it worked out great, but stuck on trying to figure out how to get the "buy-4-get-one-free-total-5" scenario.  Would that plugin help for this?  I'm wondering if it might be easier to just make child products as 'packs' (2-pack@$29.95... 5-pack@$49.95) and so on.

I have used this for buy 1 get one free sales:  http://awodev.com/products/joomla/awocoupon    The developer of this plugin offeres great support, so you can always check if it will do what you want.

Yes!  I bought it previously for another store and it works out great.  I guess I'd have to look at it again to figure out if it can be applied in a way that the coupon is 'automatic' instead of requiring that customers have to enter a code manually.  In other words whether someone orders 4 or 5, they get the 5 quantity at the 4 price.

Thanks - forgot about that!

Hello Hammerhead

I am using the awocoupon pro solution. It works quite well, has a lot of possibilities. Which makes room for some glitches. But Seyi has been very quick to correct them. The extension can make automatic coupons. It takes som effort to read through the guides in order to get it working, but then it works just great. Highly recommended.

I think you are mixing different concepts here,

The "buy 4 get one free", the specific component for that was always Bonus Items, worked fine for vm2, dont know vm3 since we dont use it https://www.daycounts.com/shop/virtuemart-2/bonus-items.htm don't know why It was remove from joomla extensions website :-\

A different thing is free shipping and that can be done per value of the total cart with http://open-tools.net/virtuemart/shipping-by-rules.html

And you can try awocoupon as recommended.
