Current menu item to be highlighted

Hi folks,
Can't find a solution for this, I have a VM category module in left hand column and I'm trying to find a way of highlighting or change the font colour so the current menu item is visible to the viewer.

Is there someone out there that can help me with this? I'm using a standard VM Category Module, I just need to indicate the current category.
I've tried all sorts of combinations but can't get it to work.

I use this on a client site with only top level categories. I suspect it won't work with sub-cats.
