Meaning of child products

Hello there,

Question is general, but in most cases i use Virtuemart 2.6.x!

In some cases, client gives me for example 5 products, which are actually the same product with different custom fields and different prices and of course different SKUs.

So, i suppose you have 2 options when creating products. One is the regular one to create each product as its own and the second is to create one main product and some child products. But this is the section that i am confused (and i am sorry because i am novice at this!). As i understand i would have to create one main product with no price or custom field values and then add child products to it with their own prices and custom fields. But how exactly would i do this, in order to see one product and when i enter this product, when i change for example color custom field to change the image of the product and the price or other custom fields?

I would appreciate it, if someone could explain to me with an example on virtuemart.

There are quite a few different ways to do this - e.g. a pattern product that has custom fields etc that are inherited by the children etc
But the easiest way is to download and install the http://dev.virtuemart.net/attachments/download/950/VirtueMart3.0.9_Joomla_2.5.28-Stable-Full_Package.zip
which has many examples pre configured of each possibility -

I installed this demo package but all the products have no custom fields in order to see how when changing one product's custom field it changes also the price and/or other custom field values.

If someone has done it, please give example like this:

1) Create product with blank custom fields
2) Add child product with specific custom field values and connect with this way to parent product
3)...

I visited the page but i cannot see any product that has custom fields, that i can change and the price changes also. All products have fixed prices from backend

Look at http://demo.virtuemart.net/wear - item H2O Jacket or Skirt "Knock Roll" and change the custom options - the displayed product price is automatically updated.

Yes! Those products change and as i got it right, they have custom fields that are custom variant, so when you change value to those custom fields, price changes also!

Assume that you have one product with one SKU for example 12345. Now, this product has price 1 euro and has for example some dimensions. Same product with different dimensions with SKU 1345 has price 2 euros.

All i want is 2 products to be actually one (because its the same product but different dimensions and different price) and when user changes dimensions from custom field, the price changes but also if i add to cart this product, i will actually add the other product with the other SKU.

My client gave me a list of products, with SKUs:
333001
333002
333003
333004

All SKUs are the same product but different dimensions and different price. Can i show those 4 products as one and by changing custom fields selection to add to cart each time different product?

Perfect this was what i was looking for!

But, generally, how to create a parent product like this?Inside demo custom fields where created and then inside the parent product you just go to custom fields and there is an Add child product button?

In VM 2.6.12 i cannot see option to add child product at Custom fields area of the product

Yes! Exactly! That's why i told you at first place that i use VM 2.6.x edition!

Is there a solution for this in VM2.6.x?
