Cart variant in custom fields

I now have VM 3.0.6.2 and trying to add some drop down boxes where a customer can select a color, size from a list.
In 2.0, it was sooooo easy  , choose cart variant as type of field, put choices in default and bingo, they were created.
Now in 3.0, there is no cart variant as a field so how in the world do you get the same custom field.
I can't seem to make it work.
