Text input custom fields

Using VM 3.x and Joomla 3.x - both pretty much out of the box - I'm tearing my hair out trying to create a product that has a number of options that require the customer enter text - that is then, obviously, required to be saved.

Another of my sites, still using VM1.x and Joomla 1.5.x has products that do what I'm trying to do on the J3 site - here's a screen-shot to show a typical input with a couple of dropdowns - one with a money value and some text inputs (not too bothered about the style, just getting the text input to work)



... can someone give me some advice, or point me towards some simple instructions please?

Thanks - I've worked out the simple text input Custom fields   BUT can't see how the fields works with a monetary value to add to the base product price in the cart ... I need to have these options for selection (they can be dropdowns or radio buttons) :

A           (no additional cost)
B           (no additional cost)
C           (no additional cost)
D£n        (WITH additional cost to add in cart)
