Virtuemart installation caused blank page in joomla 3.3.6

I've browsed the forums and saw where someone had vendor id error warnings, and I had some like that. Aside error messages like that while changing configuration, the configuration changes seemed to save ok. The site seemed to work okay except for menu links to virtuemart categories. Next day I visited, though, and my Joomla installation was just a big white blank page on front end. I uninstalled virtuemart and my joomla site was a 404 page. Only restoring pre virtuemart database files restored my site.

Any suggestions?

I'm not an advanced developer or coder, so simple terms would be most helpful. I appreciate any help!
