Mod Rewrite

Hello,

I am new to Virtuemart and fairly new to Joomla.
When I browse my virtuemart products the URL is completely "unfriendly" - e.g.
abc.com/search-pages/1661/147/inks_and_toner/samsung/imagaing-unit/samsung-imagaing-unit-clp300-detail

I was told to enable mod_rewrite.. I have the SEO stuff enabled on Virtuemart and in Joomla Configuration. I have a .htaccess file, but not sure what to put inside for mod_rewrite.
Please help,

Note : I have enabled mod_rewrite on my hosting server.

Do you get the same url if you temporarily switch your frontend template to the Beez template (Joomla default template)?
"search-pages/1661/147/" might be a result of your menu structure or maybe generated by your template's menu module settings.
