Wanting to drop Hikashop for VirtueMart

All, I've been having nothing but unresolved issues in Hikashop (software my ex-webmaster recommended & installed). Their support system is not that great, and I've been waiting months for a resolution to the international shipping issues I've been having...so this is the final straw.

I've been looking around & I've seen several VirtueMart sites that look great & function how I wish my site would...so I thought of installing VirtueMart on to my site & move everything over. Although I read the sticky at the top of this forum (Joomla to VirtueMart migration), I'm no programmer or could even consider myself a webmaster...so my question is this...

Has anyone ported over things from HikaShop, and if so, how well did it go?

Also...if I was to do this, is there a function in VirtueMart that would allow me to install it & have it NOT active on my site as I populate the items in the system and later on be able to shut off HikaShop & turn on VirtueMart?

Better install the whole site on a test server and then transfer it to your main one. I think that you will need to test it for some time before going online
