Child products select box missing

I am not sure why
but if I set a price for the DEFAULT shopper group
meaning you have to login to see the price You cant see the Child Products unless you can logged in either.

HOW can i make it so ONLY THE PRICE is not displayed but you can still see what child products are available?

Set the price to the default shopper group not the product.

Im not sure i follow.
when i add a price i am adding it to the default group. but them public users cannot see the child product dropdown.

THis is the admin for the item.
I see NO REASON why the select box is missing on this item UNLESS YOU ARE LOGGED IN.
Can someone please help me figure this out??
