VM featured product module only works if category module is on same page.

Hi!
Discovered this weirdness last night:
If I want to display 3 featured products on one row on my startpage this layout only works if I publish the category module on the same page. If I remove the category module the featured products are instead displayed stacked in a list.

I nailed this down to a template issue: I run a site with rocketthemes Chapelco template. When I switched to beez template the module worked by itself. (Btw, the problem also occurs on RT:s afterburner template)

Fortunately I found a workaround. I could put the category module in a pos that is not showing (its called "copyright"), but it still fixes the display error.

But: of course I would like it to work without this hack. So, what can I look for in the coding to fix the template to work with this module?
