How do I unlunk child products from parents?

I don't know how it happened, but one of my products suddenly became the parent of hundreds of child products.  How do I unlink them?

I searched Google.  Nothing.  I searched this forum 2 ways... "unlink child products"  no results... then I searched "remove child products"... no results.  Finally I searched simply "child products" and got ONE SINGLE RESULT that doesn't even mention the linking mechanism.  (http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=98648.msg325461#msg325461)

So apparently I'm the second person in the history of Virtuemart to EVER ask a question about unlinking child products?  I don't believe that for a second.  So then what's going on here?  Why is there virtually NO INFORMATION about what seems like a VERY COMMON FEATURE???

Can anyone tell me how to unlink a child from it's parent?  I'm even willing to pay for a solution.  Name your price.
