Filter extension capable to filter product categories at same tree-level needed

For a customer's VM 2 web-shop I need a filtering extension which is able to filter product categories at same tree-level.
That shop sells literature an therefore the products shall be categorized as for instance:

   
• language
• type of literature (e.g. book, magazine, brochure)
• author
• publisher

Each language is then sub-categorized as type of literature, author and publisher, and each author is sub-categorized as language, type of literature and publisher, and so on.
So I need a filter option capable to handle categories at same level.

Why don't you use custom fields instead of categories?

many thanks for setting me on the right track. That's exactly what I needed 
Wolud be great if Custom Filters could be displayable in a future release as dropdown just like categories or manufacturers.

They can be displayed as drop-downs too.
Select the "select" display type for your custom filters from the backend of the CF component
