Hi,

I get an Error 500 when trying to install Virtuemart 2 on a fresh Joomla 2.5.4.
It's a very fresh joomla install with nothing else. It's hosted on a shared linux server at GoDaddy (php 5.2).

It tried virtuemart 2.0.6, 2.0.4  and 2.0.2, and keep getting the same error.
The "unzip .gz file to rezip to .zip" trick didn't work either.

Is anyone having the same issue?
How to solve this?

Thanks

Sounds like you have got a server with severe limitations in PHP settings. Godaddy servers vary in capabilities, some being worse than others, which is why so much time is spent on the Joomla forums with GD issues. But it may be possible to get things working, although a better host would be a good option.

First you should use a manual installation of Joomla - avoid using their autoinstaller. That way you know that file ownerships are correct. The servers usually have a tight limitation on file upload size and the time permitted for php to complete an operation. The zip package filesize for recent versions  of VM are too large to upload on a challenged server, which is why a tar.gz package is produced, but some servers timeout when trying to handle them.

Try unpacking locally and using ftp to upload the files packages, similr to as described in http://www.phoca.cz/documents/2-phoca-gallery-component/438-cannot-find-joomla-xml-setup-file

You can look at the resource limits of your server in Joomla's System information. I have never had Joomla or vM installation issues my server settings are here:  http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=102045.msg339125#msg339125

Note that Joomla 2.5 and VM2 really need PHP5.3
