Auto select Authorize.net Payment method

Hello,
I am using Joonla 2.5.11 and VM 2.0.21b.  I am using a single payment method (authorize.net) and am having the problem where the payment method radio button is not automatically selected.  I have followed the instructions in PRO's solution - https://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=108974.15 - but I can't seem to get it to work.  I suspect I am putting the recommended code in the wrong place in the php file.  Can someone enlighten me exactly where in templates/mytemplate/html/com_virtuemart/cart/tmpl/select_payment.php this code to check the single payment method should be placed?  I have changed the example code to use my payment method id but it still doesn't work.  And when viewing page source, I can't see the new code there.  Any advice?
