What is the 'categories' view for?

Up to now I thought that the 'categories' view shows the subcategories of one category and the 'category' view displays the products in a category.
But now I found out that all is done in the 'category' view, so what use has the 'categories' view?

If it is not needed, could one developer remove it from SVN? It confused me quite a bit.
