Unfortunately the live update doesn't work for everyone. most of the time the script will time out and the update process consequently stops.
I have made the update manually by uploading all new files and adding the the field "customtitle" in the DB tables virtuemart_categories_en_gb & virtuemart_products_en_gb
So far everything seems to work properly except that live update does still show update available.

Forget your tables, they wont work correctly and you will come up with strange problems all the time.
You can use the ars updater, but it times out,. just try again, worked for me.
you can just use the whole package and install it OVER your old installation (what is we do suggest) OR
you can follow the path of a developer, or in general people who use the forum. Then you just need to update the files and THEN, very important use the database update tool, described here http://dev.virtuemart.net/projects/virtuemart/wiki/Tools => "Install tables or if necessary update them"
So and what is todo for you? Just the tools, yes :-) But you must do that.
