If you want fast result use ppc advertising. It will cost you more as you need allways pay for this.
If you make you website SEO friendly you will get more visitors for free but it will take longer time to make you site seo-frienldy.
Commonly (attleast I think so) used method is to use both, so that you can get results fast and after seo-optimising is working you can decrease ppc advertising.
SEO and PPC are different things and one should go for both if your product having good profit margin. As far as PPC is concern; you need to consider ROI and can accordingly promote your product or services where as in SEO; it is long time process and may take time to get ranks in organic result.
About my opinion SEO is better then ppc. The ranking results of SEO last longer once they are archived. Top rankings decrease quite slowly, even with little maintenance of your position. And Also the most important things is SEO offers a better financial value than PPC.
As @sophieperrone said above you can choose any of following SEO/PPC to promote your products online. But you should go for SEO, if you are running small/medium volume business. And I agree with @webrocky, because SEO is quit affordable compare to PPC or other online advertising techniques.
