The article is a bit biased as the author's company speshitpilles in Magento makes a lot of money by installing and setting up the "free" community edition of Mag for users, and also moving sites from other cart systems onto Mag. ::) And of course it is also about an old version of VirtueMart and the near end of life Joomla 1.5.
VirtueMart remains popular - an average of over 3,300 downloads each day of VM2 since it was released in December.

Hey I am a user of Magento and am currently setting up VirtueMart 2.0 for a client
Magento has way more options and can better help you track your sales, customers and inventory. The only irritating part I've found about it was their attribute system but I've got the hang of it. They also allow you to create more than one store on the same or multiple domains which seems to be their greatest feature. (For me ;D )
So far, Virtuemart seems better suited for a smaller business while Magento is better for bigger ones and can have sub stores as well. One nice thing about VM is that somehow my client has connected their VM to an inventory system so there are really no products in Joomla taking up space... hmm.
But don't get me wrong, I would be using Virtuemart for myself if Magento was not there. It takes just as much work to set up either a free VirtueMart or free Magento.
I did not found either one feature that does not supplied either by Virtuemart or by the compatible to that extensions.
The article is probably based on an old version of VM (older than 1.1 as the Price by range feature exist in VM1.1) and does not takes into consideration all the extensions that cover all the the described aspects and much more
One big advantage of VM is Joomla! Magento has no real general-purpose CMS capability so if you want/need to have significant non-purely-shop content besides your Magento shop you'll probably want another (linked) website. there's a Joomla! module that lets you integrate a Magento shop in a Joomla! site, but it's a lot of work, whereas VM natively integrates with Joomla!.
Actually, Magento has some great programmers coming from everywhere and so someone came out with a simple blog extension that can be used to add articles or recipes or whatever you want to post about. It allows categories, tags, comments and as many articles as you would like. If you visit Magento Connect, it is called AW Blog, takes a minute to install, and I am sure there are many more blog extensions. It takes up less space than an entire installation of Joomla or Wordpress just for a posting feature if you want to use Magento.
Of course you are right that it doesn't come outright with it, but this blog extension is free. Joomla does also have the nice sidebar modules which I love though...
