Is there a default theme for VM? I have a custom template and when in VM it seems like some styles are just missing. Is it something I did or just the lack of a default theme or template in VM?

You are using the default theme which will also be partly styled by your Joomla template css. It is easy to modify the VM views using template overrides. See http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=90935.0
