Title: New golf site - would love feedback
Post by: Gaetan on October 04, 2007, 14:06:39 PM
hi to everyone in the vm community.

www.birdieball.com.au (http://www.birdieball.com.au)

I've recently completed my first website using joomla and virtuemart.  What a great system for a real beginner like me.  Although there are still a few things I plan to do they are mainly styling bits and pieces.  to get to the stage i am at I reckon I've lived at the vm forums for four months straight!!  a huge thanks to everyone who so selflessly contribute and help.  i really appreciate it.

Anyway, i'd love to hear what people think.  visit us at www.birdieball.com.au (http://www.birdieball.com.au)

I like it - Its simple and clean. Its clear and engaging from the word go. I would consider centering the page and perhaps look at the colour scheme - there are loads of web sites where you can generate your own complimentary colour schemes - http://www.limov.com/colour/schemes.lml

Also look at some SEO so that your pages can get indexed by search engines

Otherwise good job

:)

Thanks for taking the time Nirm.

I didn't know that it wasn't centred so I'm glad you pointed that out.  I'll definately change that.  Interesting you mention the colour scheme - I'd started out with a scheme and for whatever reason strayed from the path as things went on.  You've motivated me to look back into it.

Thanks again

On my browser (IE6), the cart and featured products modules on the right are being pushed down to the bottom of the page as the main module is too wide for my browser (1280 x 1024).

Also, the fonts on the left modules are different sizes?

Maybe start your site with the online catalogue set to the homepage too?

Thanks vm_user.  I'd never checked my site with any version of IE other than 7.  But thanks to the heads up I see I've a bit of a problem.  Perhaps is has something to do with how I've laid our the divs in my template cause the actual width of the template is only 1000px.  I'm wondering if I just leave it though and count on people progressively updating their version of IE.

Lob73.  I guess your question refers to the category names appearing at the top of the respective pages rather than the generic word 'browse'.

You can find the answer here thanks to Deneb:  http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=15682.0

Thanks for checking out my site and taking time to give me your thoughts.

Finally got around to addressing some of the suggestions I received.  Thanks to Nirm, I've changed the colour scheme and centred the page.  However, I haven't fixed the layout issue with IE6.

I also installed the Virtuemart Coupon Redirector from Sid Khullar.  Strictly speaking a Joomla plugin, it allows you to set a code that when entered by a user will redirect them to a predetermined url.  That way you can publish a product in an unpublished category, issue a code that will redirect users to the unpublished product thus limiting who can access the product.  Of course, you could enter the page's url directly but for our use that is of no concern.  We use it to provide 'members only' specials.  Feel free to try it out.  The current unlock code is "bbdozens" and it needs to be entered in the red box on the left sidebar of  www.birdieball.com.au.

Thanks for all the feedback and help so far.

Clean. I think customers are grabbed by color though. You might consider adding something that popps out at them.

Coupon Redirector HELP NEEDED
Online at http://www.paulmurphyphotography.com/pmp/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=251&Itemid=261

Coupon Redirector from Sid Khullar

We have been trying to set up the Coupon Redirector and have not been able to get it to
work correctly.

We can see it works based on this site.
http://www.birdieball.com.au/
Code: bbdozens

Here is what we have done
1. Install Coupon Redirector module on site.
2. Locate web address for items. Save address as this will be needed later.
3. Open VM.
4. Un-publish product category
5.Open Coupon Redirector module.
6. Enter code and coresponding web address (for unpublished category)
7. Repeat different codes and addresses.
8. Publish Coupon Redirector Module in cart.
9. Go to cart page.
10. Enter code.
11. Code goes to main page and does not redirect.
   www.paulmurphyphotography.com/pmp/index.php?usercoupon=2
Note the code = 2 (this is for testing only!)
12. Re-check VM, module settings and web address.
13. All looks correct.

So on www.birdieball.com.au, the code leads to the main page and then redirects to the VM page.
Locate www.birdieball.com.au
Enter: bbdozens
Watch address
   1-Goes to www.birdieball.com.au/usercoupon=bbdozens
   2-Redirtects to www.birdieball.com.au/index.php?page=shop.browse&category_id=15&option=com_virtuemart&itemid=1

What was done to make the page redirect??

code 1 = http://www.paulmurphyphotography.com/pmp/index.php?page=shop.browse&category_id=34&option=com_virtuemart&itemid=330

Code 2 = http://www.paulmurphyphotography.com/pmp/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=16&Itemid=330

code 3 = http://www.paulmurphyphotography.com/pmp/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=6&Itemid=330

Code 4 = http://www.paulmurphyphotography.com/pmp/index.php?page=shop.browse&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=330

Correct
2. Locate web address for items. Save address as this will be needed later.
I presume that you are referring to your vm items
3. Open VM.
4. Un-publish product category
The items you mentioned in step 2 must be within this category and although you unpublish the category, you must publish the items.
5.Open Coupon Redirector module.
6. Enter code and coresponding web address (for unpublished category)
You should enter a code and the url (web address) for the item you want that code to point to, not the url for the category.
7. Repeat different codes and addresses.
See my response to step 6.
8. Publish Coupon Redirector Module in cart.
I don't understand your publishing the module in the cart. You should publish it in a module position that you have available in your template.  As per my site I have published it on every page in the second to top module position in the left side bar.
9. Go to cart page.
Here you are referring to vm's inbuilt coupon code facility.  This accepts discount (permanent or gift) coupon codes that you set up within the coupon section of the vm administration.  This facility is used solely for providing discounts and is in no way related to the coupon redirection module we are discussing.
10. Enter code.
11. Code goes to main page and does not redirect.
www.paulmurphyphotography.com/pmp/index.php?usercoupon=2
Note the code = 2 (this is for testing only!)
12. Re-check VM, module settings and web address.

code 3 = http://www.paulmurphyphotography.com/pmp/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=6&Itemid=330
Code 4 = http://www.paulmurphyphotography.com/pmp/index.php?page=shop.browse&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=330

In summary, the coupon field within the cart has nothing to do with the coupon redirection module.  You need to set up your coupon redirection module as follows:

Hope this helps.
