Not specifically a standlone VirtueMart issue, when compbined with OPC the order will no longer proceed to the Paypal checkout page. Some diffing and digging between versions identified the changes between versions we were upgrading and a new conflict with VP One Page Checkout.
VirtuePlanet despite not updating their software for over a year required continued subscription to post on their forums, so I've contacted them directly and posting a temporary fix here:

Joomla 5.4.10
VP One Page Checkout 7.35 (16 Nov 2025)
Our updates and then things broke:
VirtueMart 4.8.4.11374 → 4.8.6.11642
TemplateCK 5.6.9 → 5.6.10
Problem: After upgrading VirtueMart, PayPal checkout returned customers to the shopping cart without creating an order. Wire transfer and Stripe worked.
Cause: VP One Page Checkout 7.35 submitted a conflicting task=confirm field while VirtueMart 4.8.6 expected task=orderdone.
Fix: Remove this line:
<input type="hidden" name="task" value="confirm" />

Result: PayPal now creates a Pending order and redirects to PayPal. Stripe was retested and also reaches its payment page.
Status: Checkout issue resolved. Actual payment completion remains untested.
