for a shop with only digital products I'd like to disable both shipping address and selection of shipment method as both are not required.
How can I do this?

You can consider using the VP One Page Checkout plugin (https://www.virtueplanet.com/extensions/vp-one-page-checkout), which has options to disable both the shipping address and the shipment method selection.
