while trying this extension https://extensions.virtuemart.net/shopper-order/orders/eu-vat-id-checker-detail (https://extensions.virtuemart.net/shopper-order/orders/eu-vat-id-checker-detail) I realized that at times depending on the origin of the VAT number (Germany, Belgium, . ..) that the European VIES service https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/#/vat-validation (https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/#/vat-validation) does not respond. Registration is still accepted and the customer can order but he will have to pay VAT even though he certainly has a valid number. Does it often happen that the Europea site cannot respond to the VAT number test? I would love to have your feedback.
I would have liked to avoid moderation of the accounts by the administrator ... to activate the account once the VAT has been validated.

I think it happens quite rare, but it happens. If you have lets say 100 customers a day, maybe 3-5 times a month.
The problem is, that according to the law, you have todo the check any new day. So the result is stored for a day.
