VM 3.2.1, Joomla 3.6.5.
Since the latest update the custom fields title is shown in the cart underneath the product name.
See screenshots for examples for 3.2.1 site and virtuemart demo site http://demo.virtuemart.net (3.0.19)

Is like that for demo purposes. You can simply turn off Show Title in the Custom Field editor for those titles you don't want to show..
