I use Joomla 3.6.2 and Virtuemart 3.0.18, php 5.5.38
My Shop is under http, no https in use.
When I use Paypal "Sandbox"-Environment, everything is fine. After payment and returning to my shop, the order status is set to "complete".
When I use Paypal "Production"-Environment, I can pay in Paypal, and return to my Website. There is no error in my log-Files. But the status of my order stays unchanged (Pending).
In Paypal the status of my Orders is "Complete", as it should be.
I can access this page without error: http://yourdomain.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&view=pluginresponse&task=pluginnotification&tmpl=component
My provider is www.strato.de (German provider).
I used debug-Mode but did not find any difference between sandbox and production mode.
In both cases, I am warned by paypal, that the communication to my site is not secure (because my shop is not in an https environment)
Does anyone have an idea, how I could solve my problem.
Paypal did not react the last 4 days, after I asked them on their support site. :(
Did I forget to mention anything important?
Oh, this does not work, wether I use special characters in user names or not.
Is this because I dont use a secure website (no https). I did not find anything about this on paypals support.

IMHO I would say no.. many of the sites I support are not https and all have no probs reported with Paypal and confirmation
What does the IPN log in your paypal say?
I had the same problem and solved it by switching to https

I now changed to SSL, but it does not help anything. The order status is not changed.
Because I m so despared, I inserted a notification-URL.
In Paypal the order Status is changed.

Number of Retries: 8
Yet another question: where are the log-files of the paypal plugin saved to the server?

log is saved to your joomla configured log folder .. normally /log or /logs
