I have following urls for categories
1. /catalog/category_1
2. /catalog/category_2
3. etc.
Urls for catalog items
1. /catalog/category_1/item_1
2. /catalog/category_1/item_2
3. /catalog/category_2/item_3
What I want to achieve is to move categories links to root of my site but preserve links to catalog items, so search robots and users will see following urls.
For categories:
1. /category_1
2. /category_1
For catalog items:
1. /catalog/category_1/item_1
2. /catalog/category_1/item_2
3. /catalog/category_2/item_3
/catalog is an alias which is configured via link administrator/index.php?option=com_menus&menutype=mainmenu&task=edit&cid[]=44 and it points to index.php?option=com_virtuemart

Sorry, I do not understand what you mean.
oh wait, sorry. i readt your post again.
I do not know an easy way to do this.
The new version has an option, which works almost like that.
It just removes also all categories for your products, so we need for you a kind of mixed mode. Silvermembership would cover the development costs http://extensions.virtuemart.net/support/virtuemart-supporter-membership-detail
