Joomla 3.4.5, VM 3.0.12
On 4 installations of VM I'm seeing the same strange behavior. When I make changes to products I lose my thumbnail image.
In troubleshooting this I notice that the "Used thumb url" value (for example: images/stories/virtuemart/product/resized/Zoeller__Fuzzy___4b3a80f754990_x.jpg) is not accurate.
If I right click the preview image to open the image in a new tab (on the front end too) I get a different URL: images/stories/virtuemart/product/resized/SJ139_thumb.jpg
The URL displayed in the Used thumb url field does not exist.
When I make changes to a product and save, the "false" URL is prefixed with (Default URL) and the preview image is no longer seen:
(Default URL) images/stories/virtuemart/product/resized/Zoeller__Fuzzy___4b3a80f754990_x.jpg
Can anyone help me resolve this?
See http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=132128
http://docs.virtuemart.net/tutorials/templating-layouts/222-different-thumbnail-sizes.html
I should have also explained that these sites are using Custom Thumbnail images. Dynamic Thumbnail Resizing is disabled.
I can upload the custom thumbnail through the backend and save. The thumbnail is then referenced in the DB using this path, retaining the original file name: images/stories/virtuemart/product/resized/SJ139_thumb.jpg.
But VM shows the other path after the save: images/stories/virtuemart/product/resized/Zoeller__Fuzzy___4b3a80f754990_x.jpg
Then we make any changes to the product and save the thumbnail image is removed from the site we get a URL like this displaying in VM:
(Default URL) images/stories/virtuemart/product/resized/Zoeller__Fuzzy___4b3a80f754990_x.jpg
Then we need to uploaded the thumbnail image again to restore it.
What am I missing here in the VM configuration?
Thank you for your good description and the support buying our membership. Found and Fixed.
J3.4.5, VM3.0.12
Same problem here. So, is there a fix? ???
VM3.0.12.2 fixes the issue. I was able to get a pre-release version since I paid for a membership. Public release, I'm told, will be soon.
http://extensions.virtuemart.net/support/virtuemart-supporter-membership-detail
so there is two month old bug which is known and solution is to buy extra memeber fee, great polici
Membership helps to pay for the ongoing development of VirtueMart and does offer benefits such as early access to new versions, additional functionality and a fast track bug report/fixing system. The more members contribute, the faster the project develops and buglets are fixed. In any case we are already well past VM3.0.12.2 with 3.0.13.4 available for those who want to try it.

I've purchased membership, how do I get this fix please?
The error should be fixed since 3.0.14. At the moment we have a vm3.0.17.2 and vm3.0.17.4 will follow which is also meant to be used on a live server.
A new member version will follow then. So long the overrides within the old membership version still work with vm3.0.17.4
I am using VM 3.0.16. What is the official communication channel for new releases?
I have Enable Dynamic Thumbnail Resizing disabled and when I upload a new media, it is adding the '_x' to the end of the filename, which I do not want and the thumb is not displayed.
I want to use the same image for the main and thumb image for a subset of my product images, which are assigned to an Image Custom Field, displayed on product detail page top-right position https://starfish.directrouter.com/~vc2598u2m59543r9/shop/amore-wigs/codi-658-1279-1280 (https://starfish.directrouter.com/~vc2598u2m59543r9/shop/amore-wigs/codi-658-1279-1280).
I can get around this problem by uploading the thumb again however with hundreds of images, this would take too much time.

evens are stable and released thru the joomla updater - so .14, .16 etc
odds are final test versions for the test team and experienced users -- when stable e.g. .17 will become .18
Thanks, that's good to know.
I think you can use the last vm3.0.17.4 on a live store http://dev.virtuemart.net/projects/virtuemart/files
of course do a backup, but at the end after so many preversions only live tests can show if anything works.
