Greetings, I've searched the forum and google, and it appears that VM1 had a built in capability to sell downloadable digital files, but this was not included in VM2. (I'm switching from HikaShop which has this capability built in.)
Before I spend money on an extension, please confirm whether or not the latest version of core VM3 can or cannot be configured to sell downloadable products.
If it cannot, and I must buy an extension, can anyone recommend which one is the best value for the money for VM3?

Yes, there was a possibilty in VM1, but it was very poor. There was no controll how often you allow the download, time controll, nothing. You could just anyone give the link. Long time ago, I was quite active in the p2p scene, therefore I know their behaviours a bit. Our download plugin http://extensions.virtuemart.net/products/shipment-for-virtual-products-detail prevents that the link is just posted in some forum and misused.
VM2/3 has a stronger modular architecture than vm1. This allows to write different download plugins. Different complexity by demand.
