I'm looking for a module or plugin that will display 4/5 random categories side by side. It would need to display an image as well.

I think, it's to specific for a downloadable module or plugin.
Perhaps this module can help you http://shop.st42.fr/en/categories-tools/virtuemart-categories-menu.htm.
You can limit the number of displayed categories(5 in your case) but not randomly.
