VirtueMart is installed just like any other Joomla extension, except that the initial file package (com_virtuemart.x.x.x_extract_first.zip) must be first unzipped to give the two compomemt files.

Installation failure is usually due to failing to unpack the zip first, a Joomla VirtueMart version mismatch (VM3.0.9 can be used on J2.5.28 and J3.4.1), or insufficient PHP resources on the host.

Absolute beginners are best advised to install the combined Joomla/VM package, eg VirtueMart3.0.9_Joomla_2.5.28-Stable-Full_Package.zip  (from http://dev.virtuemart.net/projects/virtuemart/files).   You install it just like Joomla, but when installation is complete you have buttons to install sample data for VirtueMart, which you should do.  This is built on Joomla 2.5.28 rather than Joomla 3.4.x which currently has some issues, so it is better to learn on 2.5.28 which is very stable.
