Title: New user: What version, about upgrading, and more.
Post by: MarkWagner on October 08, 2014, 21:50:54 PM
Hello - any help is appreciated here.

I am new to Joomla and VirtueMart.  I have version 1.5 of Joomla on an install I inhereted.  I will find out about upgrading it.  I do not know what version of VirtueMart I have, can anyone tell me where to look?  If I want to upgrade, which the security notices indicate I do need to, will it be seamless from my present install?

Can I set up VirtueMart to do FedEx shipping calculation, and payment through PayPal, without requiring a user login?

Thanks for your help!

Mark

Version of VM

Sign in to backend and go to the VM component - the version is shown there on the left menu

Look at the migration component available in the extensions are of VM site - then test a conversion using a test setup of your site

Yes you can allow customers to pay without registering either on your shop or with paypal

No idea regarding Fedex.

Thanks, its v 1.1.9 stable.

Appreciate the help!

Now to find out about FedEx.  For FedEx shipping clients, there is a substantial discount if the shipment uses the FedEx shipping calculator.  I think I had read VirtueMart integrates with that, which would be great.  I bet that's another area on the forums here though...

There exists two plugins for fedex. One of our clients is using one. If the integrated migrator does not work for you, I recommend to use the migrator of daycounts http://extensions.virtuemart.net/import-export/virtuemart-migrator-detail .
It is also at least one of the best joomla updaters. All data isnt touched, so you can create a subdirectory for example and test a fresh j2.5 installation from scratch. The migrator imports it then from the old installation. Just important to use a fresh db, or at least different suffix.

Agree with Milbo

Daycounts' Migrator seems to be the best available!

Although would mention that I have yet to have any problems/failures with the in-built migrator after 30+ migrations - none though are particually complex VM sites though
