Although there are no 'Add to cart' links on the detailproduct pages thet do appear in the home page module and on the products within categories listing.

I don't understand. What is showing that you do not want to show? Normal catalogue display in default VM templates shows the products with prices but with no add to cart. If you turn off "Show prices" in configuration then the prices will not display either. If you see different then it is probably a problem with VM overrides in your Joomla template.
