Usually it also says if its a testversion or stable, but not now?
Still for Joomla 2? Or is this just a test-version before VM for Joomla 3?

First public beta version of 2.9 for J3.x (and also should work on J2.5). Not for use on live sites, but the more people who test it and report back on the Development & Testing board (http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?board=136.0) the quicker the development process will be.
The stable version will be VM3
