I downloaded the new package and manually installed everything in Joomla install now when I go to virtuemart it says that I need to upgrade still can anyone help me with this
Click on the live update button. Then scroll down & click on Refresh the update information. Then go back and you should see "You have the latest version 2.0.26c " - assuming that you do actually have the latest.
This usually autoupdates once logged out of the BE and the browser closed down.
I'm complete noob and learning on my own mistakes! I did same upgrade on a live site today (Joomla 1.5.20), and everything was messed up. VirtueMart admin panel is showing:

And when I click Purchase button on the web site, it returns error: 500 - Layout "default" not found
Also, I did not do backup of the site (!) Can you help please?
The current versions are not suitable for use on Joomla 1.5, as VirtueMart 2 now uses Joomla ACL which is not compatible with the the old Joomla version. You may be able to install the 2.0.14 over the top of the current version with Joomla's extensions manager and recover the site, but I have never tried this. Suggest you try it on a backup of the site, though.
