Hi.
It is possible to have one sort option with ascending for default and an other with descending.
I have see this in one virtuemart site.

At one time?

If not customer could sort one time with this order (asc or desc doesn't matter), and other time try out other kind of order (again no matter what they choose - desc and then asc).

for example i want to for short description sorting the default is descending and for price the default was ascending. When user choose short desc show product descending and when user choose price show product ascending.
