Title: OpenSourceMatters, Mambo and Mambo-phpshop
Post by: iris7 on August 18, 2005, 19:58:26 PM
As I'm sure everyone knows what's going on...
if not check the following two sites for updates.

www.opensourcematters.org  (http://www.opensourcematters.org)
www.mamboserver.com (http://www.mamboserver.com)

Ok so now my question...
how will this effect mambo-phpshop?

I have been very quite on the mambo forums the past few years as I've devoted time to custom development, life and other business; but have been very active as a contributor and consultant on various mambo-related projects.

Besides... keeping up forums will take your soul and sleep if you let it.....

The mambo-phpshop "fork" (or "spoon" if you prefer) has been a God send and I am pleased more and more by the advances this version is making.
So much so that I've made it the prefered version used by my company when doing mambo sites.

So now that there will be a new version of mambo that will likely take a different course than the "mambo foundation version", which code base will mambo-phpshop follow?

Also, I'm wondering if Soeren has made any official statements or would like to.

Sorry if this has been addressed already, there are SO many forums I read that it's hard to keep up with everything while still getting any work done.

Best of luck to core dev team and as well as those who decide to stick with the foundation.
And Soeren thanks for starting such a valued project.

I would venture to guess that Soeren will follow the open-source fork.

Any formal statement ?

Will Mambo-phpshop support Mambo foundation or OpensourceMatters ?

Soeren is probably just back from holiday.... so NO, no formal word from him yet.  Give him a moment.  The thread about this at forums.mamboserver.com is only about 60 pages long... or was that 70...

As you can see I posted a question also here:

Hello @all,

I'm really happy to have had a so good and relaxing vacation. When I went away, everything was fine, now that I'm back there are two teams developing a CMS from the same codebase into different directions: Miro's devTeam and the old new Core Team of OSM.

Mambo or OSM?
Beside the question of good and evil I'm sure that it's the right decision to develop for a project that allows all 3rd party developers to write code for the CMS without forcing it to become member of a foundation (that's what Miro's Foundation rules contained).

The core developers have decided to go their own way independently from Miro/Mambo. Nearly the whole community has followed.
That's were the mambo-phpShop project will go: where the OpenSource community can freely live and develop - OSM.

New name
The name for the new CMS of the OSM team will surely not have *Mambo* in it. I had thought about renaming mambo-phpShop to MamboMart, but at this stage I think it's better to find a name that's independent from another project's name.

Support for what version?
Let's see where Miro goes with Mambo and where OSM goes with it's ***. If both split up to much in their codebase (and that is to be expected), the project will follow the OSM team's codebase.

I hope this clears up things a little bit.

ciao, Soeren

Hello Soeren,

I'm glad you had a good vacation.
Yes I'm with you on the wait and see. Yes OSM sounds like better choice.

Thank you Soeren, I was expecting that you will go with OSM as well.

Congratulation!

Hi Soeren,

Glad you had a good vacation :)
Thanks for making clear the direction you will lead the shops development.
I would agree that when you decide to rebrand you remain independant from the CMS name, you never know what will be around the corner.

Probably something to do with the counter thing on the page?  It reached 0 and the site stopped responding.

I'm very confused though.  I just found mambo-phpshop and now it looks like I might have to switch already or something?  hmmmm

I dont't think you should worry a lot about that. We all use(d) mambo, you know.. so if you aren't involved with Miro (mambo cms's founders) in any ways, it's mostly the name that changes.

That's the way I see it, I must add.

I really like the template on joomla.org!
but the name....hhmm

This project will definitely not be named with something like Joomla!...
Although JoomlaCart is not bad. But I think that a better name can be found, which is independent from another project's name.

Let's wish all the best for our new baby called "Joomla" and support it as good as we can.

Hopefully the new project comes up with a joomlaforge.net and CVS soon.

ciao, Soeren

All I know is, I have several issues right now keeping me from finalizing my shop and getting it up and running and I'm confused as hell as to where to post my questions.  I try to be good and put them in the bug tracker but they don't seem to get as much attention as the ones in forums.  And I can't even access the joombla forums now.

Joomla!? (of all the names put forward...)  I know they wanted it to be catchy but... Oooh! It will be exciting to hear what mambo-phpShop will become!

Welcome back Soeren ^^

Why not just call it something like....

a-la-cart

Sort of has a connection to Joomla but can then be adopted to anything.

Colin.

Hello,

thanks for your input. I just want to inform you that a name has been found. I will announce it soon, so this project can continue without "mambo" in its name.

ciao, Soeren

btw: Maduka would have been a good name too.

Glad to hear that you are down with the transition Soeren - it means alot to many of us.  You have worked very hard and are dedicated, that is clear.

Can't wait to her the name chosen.

I had hesitated to install and develop using the Mambo-phpshop edition 4.5.2.3 release for some new projects, but given your comments and the quality of the development community of Joomla, I am confident that Joomla and phpShop will also be supported at the same high level.

Thank you very much - look forward to all the new things going on.
