I just to try to update my VM, now I have the version 2.0.2, an I want to install the version 2.0.18a (I don´t understand wy the 2.0.18a is newer...)
Joomla 2.5.9
PHP 5.4
If I click To the new version update gib me this error:
Fatal error: Cannot pass parameter 2 by reference in /homepages/30/dxxxxxxxx/htdocs/joomla/administrator/components/com_virtuemart/liveupdate/classes/download.php on line 40
What can I do?

18 is much higher than 2 ........... And now we are on 2.0.18b
The VM live updater requires that you are on a fast server with good connectivity. Safer and more reliable to use Joomla's extensions installer to install the two components when making an update. Make sure that you run the updates on a backup of the live site first as you will probably need to make some configuration changes.
If you use template overrides you may need to update them, live update info is on http://virtuemart.net/index.php?option=com_content&id=416

Nobody knows what is the problem?
The report is MySQL error 2006 / gone away which is usually a server configuration problem.

I can not make this because I have not a dedicated server, I can not change the execution time.
There is not another way to update? Any idee?

You don't need a dedicated server except for a very big/busy site. Good hosts provide sufficient resources as well as the ability to use your own php.ini settings even on shared servers.
You could try unpacking the components locally and using ftp to upload the files packages so you can use "install from directory", similar to as described in http://www.phoca.cz/documents/2-phoca-gallery-component/438-cannot-find-joomla-xml-setup-file Do this with the main VM component first, followed by the VM aio component.
