Someone had requested this feature in VM 1.1.x time, but this had never been implemented . Maybe, it had never been noticed by the VM team.

It would be great to have a special field for the trackingnumber in the admin orders view. Giving the customer a tracking number right away with the shipping confirmation mail is standard in the onlineshopping world.
Or does someone know an extension which solves this?
Even if you had the field available in VM u still need some interaction with the shipping plugin to obtain and store this number unless you are doing this manually when you set it to shipped.
If your manually doing this why not just add it to the customer note when you change the status to Shipped?
This is would be a nice addition.
The note field can be used as GJC added but would be great to have this a separate field as well, used only for that.
This way we can filter our orders, generate reports and stuff based on these tracking numbers
With such a field/information it should be easy to create a tracking link for the shipping-mail. Usually there is a website www.shipping-company.com/tracking/'tracking-number', so if there would be a field to each shipping-method for the shipping URL and a field to each order for the shipping code, it should be easy for VM to create a Tracking-URL and to provide it within the shipping mail.
For the most modern onlineshops this is standard and nothing special. I think it would be a great small feature for VM.
I tried to send a URL-Link through comment field, but it was not recognized as a link in the email. Even when I fill in HTML-code it doesn't work, so there is no possibility for me to provide a easy to handle "one-click" tracking link for my clients.
We would like this feature also. We currently use the comments field but feel for a eCommerce system it would be much better to have it integrated into the system and for when a customer views their order, they can see the tracking link to check it's delivery status.

Of course the benefit of tracking links/numbers associated with the order and the ability to provide this on a customer order status update is a very useful feature.
My preference is to have this detail on the order email update (and this is why I am currently using the status comment) the comment is available for customers to see.
Adding a tracking number field to the order data is not a big job - (making it available everywhere in the system takes a significant time longer)
The ability to provide "integration" is determined by the shipping plugin and whether it integrates real time with a shipper. Most shippers will have their own business processes and capabilities regarding integration and therefore this can often require bespoke development.
Here is where we currently are with our shipper:-
- They provide software to us for booking and managing pickups - this has to be used to streamline their processes.
- When we book a parcel with them, they send emails updates directly to our customers - this contains the tracking information. The downside of this approach is that the shipping tracking information is held within their software.
- Consequently we have had to build an process that extracts this data from their system and updates our backend orders with the relevant "Shipped status" and at the same time adds the tracking data to this status comment (we also add some other important information to this note- no. of parcels, booked weight band)
- We could have added a new data field to the order information for tracking purposes and we may do so in the future
IMHO - i think it is really down to the shipping plugin integrations to support the tracking capabilities.
Maybe a tracking data field will be added in a future release.
