Best to wait until J3 is stable, 3.0.1 will be released very soon with 3.0.2 not long after, but there is at least a year before the LTS 3.5 version is released.
To support J3 the support for J1.5 users must be discontinued. I'd guess this will be at VM2.2 release (Milbo may correct me on that!).
In the meantime, if you are an advanced/experienced developer then you could work through this list: http://docs.joomla.org/Potential_backward_compatibility_issues_in_Joomla_3.0_and_Joomla_Platform_12.1

well my customers are allready asking for it..because of the mobile feature.. i can put bootstrap in joomla 2.5 that's no problem.. but they wanna have 3 soo. wel.. that's why i asked when will there a version support...
Hi,
Please read the posts that jenkinhill provides you. Joomla 3.0 just released (a week ago) and i am sure have pretty issues. Also J3.0 is not an LTS release, 3.5 will be. So, if you develop sites using joomla cms you already know the answers to your clients and i am sure you can explain why joomla 2.5 is the only J LTS release until now. So you will have to wait i think ... is too soon to speak for web sites using joomla 3

So what If we want to create a new shop right now?
We create it in Joomla 2.5 and Virtuemart 2 and in a few months is outdated again? another nightmare to update to joomla 3 etc?
Just asking, should we wait for joomla 3 and Virtuemart version to be compatible?
Regards
Hi,
After the Joomla word conference decided that Joomla 3.5 will not be released until early to mid 2014.
So if you were holding out to upgrade from 1.5 to 3.5, might as well jump on to Joomla 2.5. Joomla 2.5 is a Long Term Release and will be supported until mid 2014.
Joomla 2.5 is the CURRENT version of Joomla.
NO you shouldn't wait! Go with Joomla 2.5 and VM2 ... Joomla 3.5 LTS is far away ...
Regards
Current information is that Joomla 2.5 will be officially supported until at least late 2014 if not longer. They have purposefully slowed the major release cycle as an 18 month LTR schedule is unsustainable (and unpopular) for business users and for 3rd party developers.
Thanks for the info.
I guess they also work more and more in making updates less painful for webmasters so maybe the update from joomla 2.5 is to 3.5 is not as bad as it was from joomla 1.5 to 2.5 or maybe im just a dreamer ;)
Regards
Hi

Well,
sorry but, i still can't find the answer, i might deserve double facepalm but the topic you pointed out says 2.0.4 will be compatible with J3
we're now at 2.0.20 (16 releases later than 2.0.4) and it seems to still not be, so facepalm me as long as you want but, my question stands

...you pointed out says 2.0.4 will be compatible with J3
Read again please ;D
quote : "No. That is currently planned for 2.0.4"
You read it again before I corrected that typo. It's planned for version 2.4
ok ok thanks :)
Yes the plan is this time that we have a j3.0 compatible (at least test) version some months before they release the 3.5
Current plan is for release of J3.5 in March 2014 and end of LTS for J2.5 at end of September 2014, at which time J4.0 should become available - and people start asking how long before VM will work on J4..............
I think they already had complains for the update philosophy in some of their conferences. (Joomla team im talking about)
We just launched our website in VM2 and joomla 2.5 so in 2014 is outdated?
Following their logic one should change website each year and a half or 2 years which is something I can't really understand and I say change cause updating means you assume all 3rd party developers will update their components/templates/plugins etc to work in newer versions which we all know usually never happens.
The response to the frequency of update complaints from 3rd party developers and from people responsible for managing large or corporate Joomla sites was to go from 18 to 24 month cycle for Long Term Supported releases. I still think that is too short a period, and means that component developers spend a lot of time on making compatible code for the next J version, while continuing to support the last/current LTS version, instead of bug fixing and introducing new functions.

Yeah I agree. Is a ridiculous time. Both for developers and web owners feels like you are on a race to build a website with a limited life.
What they are gonna make with that philosophy is that in 5 years time we have joomla websites in 5 different versions, cause at the end of the day what people want is to build a website that is nice and works ignoring if is version 1.5 or 4.5.
What is even more incredible is that when they declare the end of life of a version they don't even release security fixes so you have to think you are using an insecure and outdated version which forces you to update.
At least I hope the update from 2.5 to 3.5 is not like the one from 1.5 to 2.5 :o
Does anyone have a supposed date to get a J3 compatible version? If it's gonna be a long wait then I'll downgrade to j2.6, otherwise I'll convince my client to wait a bit.

As mentioned above, the developers aim to provide stable J3.5 VM2 version around March 2014. Test versions might be available a few months earlier, but remember that test versions might still have problems in some areas. Also, keep in mind that after the release of a J3.x compatible version all the VM extension developers, i.e. payment extension providers, will need some time to catch up. So at present I would still beginn with the current Joomla 2.5 15 and VM 2.0.22a and start adding content. Installing Joomla/VM2 is done in a few minutes, but adding content and configure it to meet all legal requirements can take several months. Of course this will require some additional migration work later, which your client will probably will have to pay for.
While i do understand why you are not going do to a "stable" release before Joomla 3.5, any info on when you expect to start the alpha/beta states of VM 2.2 (or what you are gonna call the version with this support) for J!3 would be nice info to put out there somewhere.... and as always with develop info, all info is approximations ;)
There might be a short info related to your question in the next news release ;)
